Standardization, voluntary certification and CE marking of the bitumen shingles.
The European norm EN 544 defines the specifications of bitumen shingles (composition, minimum mass of bitumen, geometrical and mechanical characteristics and durability), as well as the corresponding testing methods.
The current applicable version dates back to May 2006 and is available from each national normalisation body.
CE marking falls under a legal constraint resulting from the European Construction Products Directive; it aims at attesting the conformity of shingles with the hEN 544 standard.
The CE marking of bitumen shingles is mandatory in European Union since October 2007.
As a voluntary procedure , the certification of industrial products enables manufacturers to achieve from an independent certification body a certificate of compliance for its products with a system of reference (characteristics, levels of performance, testing procedures).
Such a procedure exists in some European countries (for example in France with the “Marque NF”).
